Left the UAE with a company or visa still open? UAE Wind-Down →

Can I base my company in Dubai but live abroad?

In shortYes, you can own and run a UAE company while living and travelling abroad, and many international founders set up precisely to get a credible, low-tax base without staying put. Two things to manage: a UAE residence visa needs periodic presence to stay valid (the well-known rule is at least one entry roughly every six months for a standard visa), and your personal tax still depends on where you actually live under each country's rules, not simply where the company is registered.

For internationally mobile founders, the appeal of the UAE is often the base, not the beach. You want a serious home for the business, and the freedom to be anywhere. That works, with two things handled properly.

Owning and running it from anywhere

A UAE company can be owned and operated from overseas, with 100% foreign ownership standard in freezones. The company, its licence and its banking are real and yours to run remotely. This is the “base it here, run it from anywhere” model: a credible, stable, low-tax home for the business while you stay mobile.

Catch 1: residence visas need presence

Most setups include a residence visa (it unlocks banking and the Emirates ID). A standard residence visa can lapse if you stay outside the UAE beyond roughly six months at a stretch, so you’ll need to pass through periodically. The Golden Visa is far more flexible for those who travel for long spells. Rules change, so confirm the current position for your visa.

Catch 2: your personal tax is a separate question

The most important nuance: where your company is based does not, on its own, decide where you pay tax. Personal tax residency follows where you actually live and each country’s rules.

The UAE gives youIt doesn’t automatically give you
0% personal income tax within the UAEFreedom from tax in a country where you’re still resident
A real company, banking and residencyA settled personal tax residency by registration alone
A potential route to a UAE tax residency certificate”Tax nowhere” status

If you genuinely base yourself in and around the UAE, the picture can be very efficient. If you drift between countries with no settled tax home, it’s more complex. Take advice on the personal side.

What you can manage remotely, and what you can’t

Most of the ongoing running of a UAE company can be done from anywhere:

  • Annual licence renewal
  • Accounting, bookkeeping and payroll
  • UAE corporate tax and VAT filings
  • Day-to-day banking via online and mobile

What typically requires physical presence:

  • Initial company registration (some zones allow remote; many prefer in-person or original documents)
  • Visa medical and Emirates ID biometrics (must be done in the UAE)
  • Opening your business bank account (most banks require the signatory in person at least once)
  • Certain approvals and regulated activities

Plan for at least one trip at the start, and periodic visits to maintain a standard residence visa.

The Golden Visa advantage

If the six-monthly presence requirement of a standard visa is genuinely difficult for your lifestyle, the UAE Golden Visa is worth looking at. It offers a longer-term residency (typically five or ten years) with considerably more tolerance for absences, the renewal requirement is much less demanding. For founders who genuinely travel for long periods, the Golden Visa turns the visa-maintenance issue into a much smaller one.

Substance makes it solid

A credible base is a real one. Genuine management, activity and decision-making in the UAE puts your company on firmer ground, for banking, for the qualifying freezone corporate tax regime (which has substance requirements), and for how your former home country views where the company is actually managed.

A company that exists only as a registered address is weaker on all three fronts. The model works best when the UAE setup has real substance behind it: actual work happens here, decisions are made here, and you visit with some regularity.

So yes, base the company in Dubai (or Abu Dhabi, or RAK) and live abroad. The craft is lining up the visa, the substance and your personal tax position, which is exactly what we work through with international founders at the start.

Where this gets specific to you: the right structure, freezone and licence depend on your activity, where your customers are and your residency goals. A short conversation pins down what actually fits.
